The Louis Franck Scholarship

Louis Franck Scholarships have been awarded since 1978 thanks to the generosity of Louis Franck CBE, to mark his gratitude for the opportunities in life which the United Kingdom gave him when he arrived here as a young man from Belgium.

This scholarship is for young UK nationals who wish to further their education, develop an international outlook and equip themselves to attain the highest level of executive management.

Working in the City of London in the late 60s Louis was concerned by the typical insularity he observed of the British in general, and its business leaders in particular. He considered that the British education system needed to help facilitate a better overview of Britain’s changing place in the world. He felt that it was essential for Britain to develop a positive understanding of the world overseas and especially Europe which he believed would rapidly assume a critical role in the country’s future. He also believed that by studying and living abroad students would make connections with fellow participants that would be valuable for life.

At that time INSEAD required a degree of fluency in German, French and English and Louis felt that this too would be increasingly important to Britons who were traditionally tongue-tied in foreign languages.

As a result Louis first sent two of his up-and-coming junior staff to INSEAD in 1970. He was delighted to see how much they benefitted from their year there.   Later he established the scholarship to encourage a wider group of young British nationals to reap the rewards of a year at INSEAD, with the hope and expectation that they would then bring these skills back to the UK to contribute to the business community there. Initially the scholarship was limited to applicants who had worked in the financial services sector, but today it is open to all British nationals wanting to attend the MBA course at INSEAD.
